Karate: Green belt

Owen continues to move through his karate belts and gain confidence and strength. He has a good attitude about going and it's great to see him interact with the other teens/adults there. The black belts are great at guiding him and he's even been put in a position to give feedback/guidance to others.Chris never takes it easy on Owen!

Snow!

We got back from the JMU game in time for the snow! They'd predicted 0-18" (how could they be wrong??) but the storm ended up shifting north, bringing us less snow and more sleet/freezing rain. We got 5" of "winter weather" which was topped with ice, making it good for sledding but not shoveling the cars out of the driveway! We've gotten two snow days out of it so far, but with overnight lows at 0-10 degrees, this snow isn't going anywhere anytime soon! It's rare for us not to have a plow come by overnight when there's snow. I only remember one other time that we were able to sled down the street. We took advantage of sledding on it and got in some good runs. It was all fun and games until Willow's hip rammed into the top of the drainage curb. Then it was time for ice and hot chocolate....and finding out that Owen's glasses didn't survive being kept in his pocket...

(Mom went down a few times too but it usually goes uncaptured)
The birds were thankful for our extra bird seed rings from Christmas!

Update: The results of this storm ended up being referred to as "snow-crete" because it was like concrete and impossible to shovel unless you got it early. Chris ended up using a breaker bar to chisel out the cars. Some neighboring areas got 2 weeks off of school but we got a week, went back for a day, then got a couple more days off because of other weather that came through. It was insane!

Smooth moves!

Owen and I went to the elementary school to sled, which we have before, but it was honestly scary! I was worried about us hitting our heads, so we only went down a few times then left before we got hurt. We don't typically make it down to the street but it was literally ice. It was hard to walk back up to the top because it was so slick.

JMU Pep Band day

A local college held a Pep Band day, inviting local high school players to come practice with the pep band and join them in playing at the men's basketball game that day. They even got a ticket to eat in the college dining hall! We had incoming winter weather that evening, but they moved the game up 3 hours, which enabled us to still go. It started snowing in our last 15 minutes on the interstate but there were snow plows waiting every 5 miles, so we were in good hands! All four of us went up for the game and we hung out at a recommended coffee shop and lunch location before heading to the game to listen to the band. They definitely brought the pep! They were playing or doing cheers the whole time. What a cool experience for Owen to be a part of! He's decided he wants to attend JMU because of one of the songs that they play ;) We'll see if that holds!

Check out them playing: here, here, here, here, herehere, here, here, here, here, here, and here.

Teen Conference

The kids were invited by the Caldwells to attend a teen Christian conference in Tennessee with them. Owen wasn't able to go because of auditions for all-district band, but Willow went and had a great time! They even had some time to explore Gatlinburg's attractions in between sessions!

SPCA

Owen and I have gotten to the SPCA a few times over break and during the week now that marching band season is over. There are always plenty of pets to love on!

Clarence
Clarence
Clarence came to the SPCA from the pound next door. He struggled going back into his kennel after being out, so his "rule" was to have 5 minutes of loving once he went back in. Owen and I were happy to oblige!

Happy New Year!

The kids enjoyed binge watching Lost episodes until 11:30 on NYE, then watched the NYC countdown. We had plenty of snacks and even Chris stayed up!!
