SPCA

 Owen and I have gotten to the SPCA a few times over break and during the week now that marching band season is over. There are always plenty of pets to love on!

Clarence came to the SPCA from the pound next door. He struggled going back into his kennel after being out, so his "rule" was to have 5 minutes of loving once he went back in. Owen and I were happy to oblige!

Volunteering

The kids keep busy with dance and karate but also take time to volunteer. Willow volunteers in the nursery every Sunday, switching between the 2- and 3-year old classes.Willow and I have been volunteering at the Rescue Mission serving or preparing meals. 

Willow helped volunteer at my school's STEM night. 

Willow and I worked at an aide station for the local half- and full marathon for our 2nd year. The aide station is at the top of a steep mountain so we enjoy writing messages on the street leading to the top. 

 We still enjoy volunteering at the SPCA. Owen does cats and dogs, whereas Willow prefers cats. Owen reads to the shy/anxious ones who aren't ready to play or interact with us.

We enjoyed getting back to the SPCA this summer after not having been since January. We tried to get in for canine enrichment once a week and feline enrichment once a week. 

This sweet kitty, named Bunny, was born with a mild form of a condition in which she doesn't have a tail and hops on her back feet like a rabbit. She wore diapers in her crate. We were so happy to hear when she was adopted!

I get so used to having Owen with me walking dogs, that I miss his "roles" when I go by myself when he's out of town. I was particularly thankful when Sugar didn't respond when we saw this deer on the trail, just 10 feet away, while I was by myself!

 This cat, Muffin, was not comfortable being around people but did play when we stood at a distance. Owen read to her a few times. 

Sassy is such a smart girl! Check her out mastering this treat ball!

We love when the kitten room is open. Tabasco and Habanero were very playful and Willow enjoyed "training" them to walk across the platforms using treats!

Some cuteness in action:

We were walking Otis on the trail when he stuck his nose into an area with downed trees. Suddenly ground bees were swarming everywhere, Otis was shaking all over, we were swatting bees away from our face, and being bit all over. We must've looked pretty crazy going nuts and trying to get away as fast as possible! We even had them on our shirts as we returned to the building to return Otis to his kennel then go home. It was quite the experience!

My biggest bite areas were on my bicep, shoulder blade, and hip. It got worse over the next few days and wouldn't stop itching, to the point that I went in to the doctor. Looks like I have an allergy to bee stings! She recommended that I carry an epipen though I don't expect a situation like this to happen any time soon! Owen was not interested in walking on the trail the next few times we went in for Canine Enrichment though!

We got Otis again the next time we went, but stuck in the fenced in grassy area. We're happy to report he's doing well!
