Can she really already be half way to 6 years old??? Willow surely is growing into quite a young lady. When I truly step back and look at her, first of all, she's a giant, and second of all, she's hardly a little girl anymore. Here's a summary of Willow these days:
* While many of the things we make for dinner are not her favorites, she does a great job of eating enough to be considered a "good dinner" so she can have a treat (her true motivation). It gives me flashbacks to my childhood when I see her close her eyes and plug her nose while she takes a bite of something she doesn't like. Her favorite dinners are pesto or alfredo on pasta (not a big fan of red sauce), breakfast for dinner (though no hashbrowns), and tacos. Her request for breakfast is usually dry cereal (Honey Bits lately).
* In the last few months Willow has started praying at dinnertime. It took her a while to feel confident enough, but we're super proud of her! She's very thoughtful in her prayers, often listing off all members of our family. Last night when I asked her who she wanted me to pray for at bedtime, she listed all members of our family, Mrs. Bray (her teacher), and a student from her class mentioning that "she's now on medicine!" (I'm sure the girl's parents are "ecstatic" that the class knows her child is now on medicine!!).
* Willow's doing great in Kindergarten. Her teacher had wonderful things to report at conferences recently about her good behavior and academics!
* Willow has been doing well with gymnastics and swimming. This week there were only 2 of them swimming instead of the usual 4 so she knew at the end of class she was going to jump into the deep end twice instead of just once since there was one other time with just two kids in the class. When Ms. Dayna told them it was just the two of them that day, the first thing out of Willow's mouth was, "We get to jump in twice today!" She's really gained a lot of confidence in the pool this fall!
* Willow still really enjoys having books read to her. At night we now have her read one to us and we read two to her. I have books from school that I bring home that she enjoys and her teacher sends home a book each week as well. Her favorites lately have been holiday books we have out.
* Willow hasn't napped for a couple years now, but has "rest time" in her room while Owen naps (seriously...this mama needs her own naps on the weekend!). She gets the iPad for 30 minutes, then Disney music on Pandora while she plays in her room. She sleeps well at night, usually asleep by 8:00 (depending on evening activities) and waking at 6:30 for school. Half of the time she's awake on her own by 6:15 but on the weekends doesn't really "sleep in" past 6:45.
* She has become quite the artist lately, impressing us with her drawing and coloring. We tried a Pictionary-type game today since she was able to read many of the words on the card. It was fun to see her confidently draw some of the objects without getting frustrated (baby, jellyfish, rain).
Here are some of her quotables lately:
- "I think my earsight is going bad."
- In the car:
Willow: "I've never seen a Cheetoh chair."
Mama (confused): "What are you talking about?"
Willow: "The song just said, 'She's got a ticket to ride a Cheetoh chair.'" ("She's got a ticket to ride, but she don't care.")
- After a drawn-out conversation with Owen about how he needed to eat his dinner with us so we could start our movie and he wouldn't miss out on the beginning (this happens ALL the time on Friday nights lately!):
Mama (exasperated): "I'm not going to bend over backwards to remind you to eat your dinner Buddy."
(long pause)
Willow: "You don't need to bend over backwards Mama. You just need to turn your head and tell him."
- In the car:
Willow: "Do they allow clippings at your school Mama?"
Mama: (thinking through the multiple meanings of clippings....clippings in football...newspaper clippings...) "What is a clipping?"
Willow: "When someone takes skin off of someone else."
Mama: "You mean, like a student taking skin off someone else? Or a teacher taking skin off a child?" (thinking...."Surely neither is happening, right???")
Willow: "Like a teacher taking skin of a student." (long pause while Mama panics) "Like when the skin is sticking straight up."
Mama: "Ooooohhhh....like a hangnail? Are you asking are teachers allowed to have clippERs at school?"
Willow: "Yeah."
